Of The Spectacle Of A Broken Home

“Drifter No.5: Of The Spectacle Of A Broken Home”

Part of series “Drifters: A series of suspicious and fleeting things.” Performance / temporary Installation during Westallee Festival‘s art segment in Stuttgart, Germany, 2017.

Mixed media: acrylic, drawings, newspaper articles from several countries and cultural circumstances circling a multitude of incarnations of the topic of “failure” ranging as far as sports, stock or stories of drug abuse, mass foreclosures during the real estate bubble burst and others put into a decollage alongside pages from Guy Debord‘s “Society Of The Spectacle“. Hourly tours with visitors were lead to the the backyard the installation was built during the day. The structure was meant to seem frail and unstable from the outside, yet, on the inside the “roof” seems to cave in and evokes claustrophobic feelings and associations with rolling mills or a large printing press hanging threateningly over the inhabitants heads like Damokles’ sword. To understand the inhabitants perspective takes effort and is highly uncomfortable. No comfort is in there except Guy Debords abstract book as a pillow. The structure looks frail, yet, from one perspective it forms a composition with the fireplace above the book, framed by the structure in an upward motion. The fireplace was used to burn a figurative portrait, to be lit to show fire set in this composition above the book representing seeking understanding and knowledge. As in all my works I look at them as a personal note on a train of thought, while my interpretation is just one of many and I love hearing others’ to learn and engage in conversations. All materials were free to be touched and inspected. No explanation was given.
